Hapuna Beach State Park
Hawaii Island

Hapuna Beach is located on the northwest coast of the Big Island of Hawaii and it has been selected by several travel publications as one of the best beaches in the world. Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is a popular state park for both Hawaii visitors and local families.

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is a 62 acre park on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, about thirty miles north of Kona and two miles south of Kawaihae, between the Mauna Kea Beach and Mauna Lani resorts. The park has a large, crescent shaped white sand beach that is about half a mile long and up to 200 feet wide during the summer months.

Water Activities
Hapuna Beach is good for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving when the surf is calm, but when the surf is high there can be dangerous rip tides and pounding shore breaks. When the surf is higher then three feet, only expert surfers and body boarders should enter the water. The surf at Hapuna Beach tends to be calm during the summer months and rough during the winter months, but it can be rough any time of the year. Note that there are often lifeguards at Hapuna Beach, but not all the time.

A-Frame Camping Shelters at Hapuna Beach
There are six A-frame tent shelters for rent at Hapuna Beach State Recreation area. The four-person shelters Hapona A Frame Tent Shelters include a single screened room with wooden sleeping platforms and a picnic table. There is also a centrally located pavilion with a range, refrigerator, and tables and restrooms and cold showers for all shelter campers to share. The last time I checked, the shelters were rented out for $20 per night. For more information about state of Hawaii camping and lodging fees see

    Other Facilities
There is a snack bar and concession stand at Hapuna Beach and also picnic tables, picnic pavilions, showers, restrooms, and parking.

    Hotels at Hapuna Beach
The luxurious Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and the Hapuna Golf Course are located the north end of Hapuna Beach.

    The Ala Kahakai Coastal Trail
Hapuna Beach is one of the places you can access the historic Ala Kahakai Coastal Trail . The trail follows the coastline over ancient fishermen's trails and Hawaiian Kingdom roads that have been connected through generations of use to form a single continuous route.
