Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge

The Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge is located on the windward side of Mount Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was established in 1985 to protect and manage endangered forest birds and their rain forest habitat. It is located on the windward side of It is approximately 32,700 acres in size. The refuge is home to several endangered birds and plants.

Visiting the Hakalau Forest Wildlife Refuge The Maulua Tract of the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge is open to the public for bird watching, hiking, and photography on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The refuge can be accessed from Hilo via Saddle Road, Mauna Kea Summit Road, and Keanakolu Road. A four-wheel drive vehicle is required. Permission is required to enter the park. Contact 808-933-6915 for permission and more information.
