Ahuena Heiau
West Hawaii Island

Articles and information about the Ahuena Heiau on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii.

The Ahuena Heiau is an important archaeological site behind the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel on a small peninsula off Kamakahonu Beach, The site is included on the United States Register of National Historic Landmarks.. The site is sacred and historically significant because it was King Kamehameha the Great's personal temple. King Kamehameha worshipped in this from about 1813 until he died in 1819. Members of Kamehameha's council frequently met with the king at the Ahuena Heiau for ritual prayers and to instruct Kamehameha's young heir to be the next ruler. Note that visitors are not permitted to go inside the temple or even to walk on the temple grounds.
