About Memorial Day
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May in the United States
and it is a day set aside to honor the memory
of the men and women who died fighting in the
United States armed forces. Memorial Day is typically
observed by placing flags and flowers on graves and tossing flowers
in the water to honor those who died at sea.
The 2009 Memorial Day holiday in the United States
is Monday, May 25, 2009.
Donate a Lei for Memorial Day in Hawaii
Every year on Memorial Day fifty thousand fresh flower leis
are placed on the graves of veterans at the National Cemetery
of the Pacific in Honolulu and at other veterans' cemeteries on
Oahu and the outer islands. The general public is invited to
donate leis made of ti leaves or fresh flowers only that
measure 20 to 24 inches before tying, and the leis must be tied.
The leis are usually needed by the Friday
before Memorial Day. For information about drop-off locations
on Oahu call the City and County of Honolulu Parks and
Recreation Department at 808-768-3002.

Natatorium Memorial Day Ceremony
The 21st Annual Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium Memorial
Day Service will take place on Sunday, May, 24, 2009 at
10:00 a.m. at the Natatorium on the Diamond Head end of
Waikiki Beach. The Friends of the Natatorium have
sponsored this event every year since 1989 to
remember Hawaii loved ones lost from all American wars
and to honor all of Hawaii's military veterans.

Schofield Barracks Memorial Day Ceremony
The U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Hawaii will present a Memorial Day
Remembrance Ceremony at the Schofield Barracks Post Cemetery
on Monday, May 25, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. USAG Hawaii commander Colonel
Matthew Margotta will be the keynote speaker and representatives
from the Military Order of the Purple Heart,
Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and
the American Legion will also participate and help place
wreaths at the cemetery flagpole. The general public
is invited to attend. They shuld enter Schofield Barracks
at the Foote Gate off of Kunia Road and have with them
a validate driver's license, auto registration, proof of
auto insurance, and valid photo identification for each occupant
in the car (all of that is necessary for security reasons).

Punchbowl Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony
The 60th Annual Honolulu Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony
will take place at the National Cemetery of the Pacific
inside Punchbowl Crater on Monday, May 25, 2009 from
8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Special guest speakers will include
L. Tammy Duckworth, U.S. Senators Daniel K. Inouye and Daniel Akaka,
U.S. Representatives Neil Abercrombie and Mazie Hirono,
Admiral Timothy Keating, Commander of the U.S. Pacific
Command, and Hawaii Adjutant General Robert Lee. More
then 35 Veterans organizations
On the Saturday and Sunday before the event,
Boy Scouts will place a lei on each grave to honor
the memory of veterans and military service members who
have passed away.

Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony
Every year on Memorial Day the State of Hawaii
Office of Veterans Services and the Governor
of Hawaii host a Memorial Day Ceremony at the
Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery
on the eastern Windward side of Oahu.
The ceremony typically includes
military band music, a traditional Hawaiian
chant, a parade of veterans organizations
carrying their flags, an honor guard rifle
salute, a helicopter flyover, and a keynote
address by the Hawaii Governor and a guest
speaker. The Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery is located at
45-349 Kamehameha Highway in Kaneohe.
This year's event will take place on Monday,
May 25, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. The key note
address will be given by Lieutenant Governor
Aiona and the Distinguished Guest Speaker will be
Tammy Duckworth, Assistant Secretary,
VA Government Affairs.

Hawaii Lantern Floating Ceremony
The 11th Annual Shinnyo-en Hawaii Lantern Floating
Ceremony will take place on Memorial Day Monday,
May 25, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in Honolulu's
Ala Moana Park. Pre-ceremony activities
During this event, 1000 candle-lit lanterns
are floated off shore in a Buddhist tradition
practiced throughout Japan to honor ancestors
and comfort the spirits of the deceased loved
ones.

CVMAHI Memorial Day Wreath Motorcycle Ride
Ever year on Memorial Day members of the
Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association of Hawaii (CVMAHI)
ride as a group to the National Cemetery
of the Pacific for a wreath laying remembrance ceremony to
honor veterans. The 6th Annual CVMAHI Memorial Day
Wreath Ride will take place on Monday, May 25, 2009.

Memorial Day Events on Maui
In past years there have been Memorial Day Services
at the Maui Veterans' Cemetery in Makawao and
at the Lahaina Veterans Memorial Hall. Other possible
venues for Maui Memorial Day ceremonies:
the Nisei Veterans Memorial in Kahului and the
Maui War Memorial Stadium.

Kauai Memorial Day Events
Visit the Kauai Veterans Cemetery on Memorial Day
Check with the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe to find
out if a Memorial Day service or ceremony will be held there during any
particular year. They cemetery can be contacted at
808-335-3692 and they are located at 4331 Lele Road
in Hanapape.
Kauai Polynesian Festival
The Kauai Polynesian Festival usually takes place every
Memorial Day weekend but the 2009 event was canceled due
to loss of funding. The organizers are expecting to bring
back the event in 2010. The 9th annual Kauai Polynesian
Festival is scheduled to take place May 27-30, 2010.
