Martin Luther King Day in Hawaii
January 19, 2009
Martin Luther King Day has been a state holiday in
Hawaii since January of 1989 when it officially
replaced Discoverers' Day as a Hawaii state holiday.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed every year
in Hawaii on the second or third Monday of January.

Oahu Martin Luther King Day Events in 2009
2009 Waikiki Martin Luther King Day Parade
The 21st annual Martin Luther King Day Parade
in Waikiki will take place on Monday, January 19,
2009. The parade will begin at Magic
Island in Ala Moana Park at 9:00 a.m. and it
will pass through Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue
before ending at Kapiolani Park, on the Diamond
Head end of Waikiki.
2009 Martin Luther King Unity Rally
A Martin Luther King Unity Rally will be held in Kapiolani
Park on Monday, January 19, 2009 beginning about 11:00 a.m.
The rally will feature live music and dance, ethnic and
local food, community organization booths, and craft
vendor booths.
2009 Martin Luther King and Presidential Inauguration Prayer
The Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew will host a
"Prayers for the Nation" service to honor Martin
Luther King and 44th U.S. President Barack Obama
on January 19, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. The Cathedral
is located at 229 Queen Emma Square in the
historic Capitol District of Downtown Honolulu.

2009 Nagasaki Peace Bell Ringing Ceremony
Every year, the Sunday night before Martin Luther King Day,
there is usually a Nagasaki Peace Bell Ringing
Ceremony near the Honolulu Hale, followed by a candlelight
procession to the Iolani Palace. I'm trying to confirm
whether or not that event will happen in 2009.
Maui Martin Luther King Day Events in 2009
2009 Kahului Martin Luther King Day Parade
The 2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace March will
take place in Kahului on the island of Maui on
Monday, January 19, 2009. The parade route will
begin at Maui Community College and end at Hoaloha Park.
The Maui Martin Luther King Peace March is presented
by the African American Heritage Foundation of Maui
to help "Keep the Dream Alive" using peaceful and
non-violent means in recognition of the Reverend
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated
in April of 1968.
Big Island Martin Luther King Day Events in 2009
2009 Earth Patriot Hip Hop Music and Dance Concert
On January 17, 2009 the Hilo Palace Theater
will present an "Earth Patriot Hip Hop Music
and Dance Concert" to celebrate the life and
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For more

Kauai Martin Luther King Day Events in 2009
2009 Celebration of Peace to Honor MLK
The Kukui Grove Center will host a special
"Celebration of Peace" in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
on Monday, January 19, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The event will take place on their center stage.
The Kukui Grove Center is located at 3-2600 Kaumualii Highway
in the town of Lihue on the east coast of Kauai. Here is a
