2006 King Kamehameha Day Events

The 90th annual King Kamehameha Day holiday will be on Sunday, June 11, 2006, and the associated Hawaii state holiday will be observed on June 12, 2006. Here is a schedule of 2006 King Kamehameha Day events, between June 9 and June 24, on four of the Hawaiian Islands.

Oahu (June 9-24, 2006)
On the island of Oahu, most of the King Kamehameha Day events will take place June 9-10 in downtown Honolulu and Kapiolani Park, and the annual King Kamehameha Hula Competition will take place June 23-24, 2006 at Blaisdell Center. Oahu events will include a Royal Hawaiian Band concert, draping lei over the King Kamehameha statue in front of the Ali`iolani Hale, a flora parade from King and Richards Street to Kapiolani Park, and an award presentation in the park following the parade. For a schedule of events and more information see the Web site of the King Kamehameha Day Celebration Committee and the King Kamehameha Hula Competition.

Big Island (June 10-11, 2006)
On the Big Island of Hawaii there will be a King Kamehameha Day celebration in North Kohala, where King Kamehameha I was born. Events will include draping the original King Kamehameha statue with flower lei, a floral parade, a music festival, and a spiritual celebration. For a schedule of events and more information see the Web site of the Kohala Kamehameha Day Celebration Committee (kamehamehadaycelebration.org no longer online?)

Maui (June 17)
On the island of Maui there will be a King Kamehameha Day floral parade in Lahaina, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at Banyon Tree Park. The route will follow Kenue Street and end at Kamehameha Iki Park, where there will be an awards presentation.

Kauai (June 17)
On the island of Kauai there will be a King Kamehameha Day floral parade in Lihue, beginning at 10:00 am at the Historical County Building on Rice Street and ending at the Antone Vidinha Stadium. Following the parade a celebration festival will be held on the front lawn of the stadium.

King Kamehameha Day was proclaimed in 1871 by King Kamehameha V, to honor his great grandfather, King Kamehameha I, the first ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The first King Kamehameha Day was on June 11, 1872, and it was one of the first holidays to be proclaimed when Hawaii became a state in 1959.
