Ala Wai Challenge

This annual canoe race and Hawaiian games competition takes place every year in a park just across the Ala Wai Canal from Waikiki. In addition to the sports events sit features a Hawaiian marketplace, food booths, and live entertainment.

Bosetti 10K Race
Annual Oahu running event with a start line near Sandy Beach that takes place every year on New Year's Day. The 2010 Bosetti 10k running event will take place on January 1, 2010.

Breathe Concert
One of my favorite January events in Hawaii is the Breathe Concert fundraiser for the Hawaii Chapter of the American Lung Association. The Breathe Concert always has a fantastic lineup of Hawaii's top musicians and singers and it takes place at the historic Hawaii Theatre in downtown Honolulu.

Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year takes place every year in either January or February every year and celebrations in Hawaii Chinese New Year celebrations include a Narcissus Festival and Queen Pageant on Oahu, and Chinese New Year street festivals, parades and lion dance processions on several islands.

Hawaii Running Cruise
Cruise through the Hawaiian islands with activities for runners.

Hawaii State Legislature Opening Ceremony
Annual public ceremony featuring singing, flowers, and pageantry.

HURT 100 Endurance Trail Race
This annual 100 mile off-road running race in Honolulu takes place on the Makiki-Tantalus trail system. The event takes place over two days and it can take up to 36 hours for all of the runners to finish.

Martin Luther King Day in Hawaii
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a state holiday in Hawaii and it is observed every year on the second or third Monday of January. Events honoring Dr. King typically include parades, candlelight ceremonies, and speeches.

Mercedes-Benz Championship
The 2010 Mercedes-Benz Championship PGA golf tournament will take place January 4-10, 2010 on the Plantation Course of the Kapalua Resort on the west side of the island of Maui.

Moanikeala Hula Festival
This hula festival at the Polynesian Cultural Center in northeast Oahu was originally a competition for children but today it is an exhibition event featuring both children and adult dancers. The 19th Annual Makahiki Festival too place on January 17, 2009 in the PCC's Pacific Theater.

Molokai Makahiki
Annual Hawaiian harvest festival on the island of Molokai featuring Hawaiian games, craft workshops, and traditional ceremonies.

New Year's Day in Hawaii
January 1 is a state holiday in Hawaii, observing New Year's Day.

Onizuka Remembrance Day
Hawaii astronaut Ellison Onizuka died on January 28, 1986 when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after take-off. He is buried at the National Cemetery of the Pacific inside Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu.

Queen Emma Kaleleonalani's Birthday
Hawaiian Queen Emma Kaleleonalani's birthday is celebrated every year on January 2. Queen Emma was the wife of King Kamehameha IV.

Sony Open Golf Tournament
Event on the PGA Tour held every January, a few miles east of Waikiki, at the Waialae Country Club near the Kahala Resort.

Whale Sanctuary Ocean Count
The last Saturday of January, February, and March is a day Hawaii volunteer visitors and residents can help count the whales in the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and record their behavior. The count takes place on Oahu Island, Hawaii Island, and Kauai Island. Volunteers must register in advance to participate. For more information visit Whale Sanctuary Ocean Count Web site.
