Billabong XXL GlobaL Big Wave Awards

?

Is this the seventh annual event?

In the seven year history of this event all of the winners of the "biggest wave" award have all come from either Hawaii or the West Coast of North America. Because of an unusual weather pattern in 2007 strongest contenders this year are in Europe and the Soutern Hemisphere. Event period closes on the Spring Equinox on March 21 2007. The nominees will be announced with only one week remaining in the competition period, there have been some last minute entries from Hawaii because of a burst of swell on the north shore of Oahu on March, just ahead of a storm. A small group of big wave riders rode a few huge waves at Outer Log Cabins, a rarely seen offshore reef between Pipeline and Waimea Bay. Dave Wassel and Garret McNamara rode some of biggest waves seen in Oahu in years and photographers Allen Mozo and Daniel Russo documented the rides.

The largest faces ridden in the last 11 months were probably the July 2007 tow-in sessions in South Africa and Western Australia.

Submissions have also been received from Tahiti, Spain, Ireland, California, and Hawaii.

Winners will be announced at the Billabong XXL Awards ceremony at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, California on April 13, 2007. Prize money will total $116,000. The awards ceremony will be Webcast worldwide.

Video clips and photographs of the 2007 entries in all categories can be viewed on the official event Web site at BillabongXXL.com.

Sponsors of the 2007 event include Monster Energy Drinks, Hawaiian Airlines, and Surfing Magazine. Surfline.com does the official surf forecasting for the event.
