August Hawaii Events Outside Hawaii
Information about August Hawaii-related events such as ukulele
festivals, hula festivals, slack key guitar events,
steel guitar events, hula workshops, Hawaiian music
workshops, aloha festivals, competitions, and other
Hawaiian and Hawaii style events held every August
outside of Hawaii.
George Naope Kane Hula Festival
The George Naope Kane Hula Festival is a hula
competition for men that takes place every year in Modesto,
Central California. In addition to the men's
contest there is a hula competition for children known
as the George Naope Keiki Hula Festival. The events
are presented by the Makanaaloha Group and sponsored by
Hawaiian Feathers. The 5th Annual George Naope
Kane Hula Festival and the 2nd Annual George Naope
Keiki Hula Festival took place on Saturday and Sunday,
August 809, 2009 at the Modesto Centre Plaza in
Modesto, Central California.
Kalama Heritage Festival
This Washington State festival was formerly
known as the Days of Discovery and it is
a tribute to the unique culture and history
of Kalama, Washington. . The event was founded
to preserve, perpetuate, and celebrate the area's
Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Native American culture
through live music, dance, storytelling, other performances
and educational programs. The 2009 Kalama heritage Festival took
place August 28-30, 2009 at Rasmussen Park in the
Port of Kalama and it featured a special performance
by The Makaha Sons.
San Francisco Aloha Festival
Annual Northern California Hawaiian and Polynesian culture event
presented by the Pacific Islanders Cultural Association
(PICA). The 15th Annual San Francisco Aloha Festival
took place on Saturday and Sunday, August 1-2, 2009
on the Parade Grounds The event featured vendor booths
and a full day of live entertainment provided by Mike Keale,
Hiram Bell, and many other musicians, singers, hula halau,
and other Polynesian dance companies.
Santa Cruz Aloha Canoe Races and Polynesian Festival
The 2009 Aloha Races and Polynesian Festival
took place on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at
the Santa Cruz Wharf in Northern California.
The event featured outrigger canoe races beginning
at 9:00 a.m. and a Polynesian Festival with vendor
booths and live music and dance performances from
11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The 2009 event featured
a special performance by Aaron Mahi, George Kuo,
Martin Pahinui, and Bobby Ingano. For information

Whittier College Aloha Concert Series
(August through May)
The annual Aloha Concert Series at the Ruth B.
Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at
Whittier College in Southern California usually
includes about six Hawaiian Music Concerts
between August and May.
