Japanese Attack on Wheeler Field
December 7, 1941

Wheeler Field was attacked before Pearl Harbor on that fateful day because the Japanese wanted to destroy any military aircraft that could thwart their plan to bomb the Pearl Harbor.

In 1941 Wheeler Air Field was the headquarters of 14th Pursuit Wing and 15th and 18th Pursuit Groups. About 90 (135?) aircraft were assigned there. Wheeler Airfield Hanger #4 is in the background of the above picture.

Japanese Attack on Wheeler Airfield
Wheeler Air Field was attacked during the first wave of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. 25 Jpaanese dive bombers dropped about 35 bombs on Wheeler field hangers and air strips. During the attack only four fighters from the 46th Pursuit Squadron were able to take off and attack the Japanese. Wheeler Airfield was attacked again during the second wave of the Japanese attack. The attack on Wheeler Airfield ended at 9:45 a.m.

-38 enlisted men were killed
-59 men were wounded but not killed
