BISHOP MUSEUM ANNOUNCEMENT
July 31, 2006

Across the globe Hawaii is known to be the birthplace of surfing and is considered the Mecca for almost every wave-rider. Duke Kahanamoku riding the waves at Waikiki Beach , the legendary barrels at Banzai Pipeline, and the giant winter waves at the infamous Waimea Bay are among the images included in the new Bishop Museum Press book, " Surfing: Images from Bishop Museum Archives" by DeSoto Brown. The book is the first in a series of pictorials that will showcase the amazing photographic collections found at the Bishop Museum .

Surfing: Images from Bishop Museum Archives will not only present over 200 amazing images from Hawaii’s surfing history, but also will feature some of the most famous and rare images of wave riding and wave riders known in Hawaii. Most of these images have never been published before and will offer a new and magical look into Hawaii’s past.

Brown, archivist and collections manager at the Bishop Museum, and author of several books relating to Hawaii’s tourism in the 20th century, expertly weaves beautiful images of surfing history with stories and captions that offer new insight into the number one homegrown sport in Hawaii. An avid collector of Hawaiian memorabilia himself, Brown will transport readers back to a nostalgic time when surfing was king in Hawaii.

Surfing: Images from Bishop Museum Archives will be available at Bishop Museum's Shop Pacifica and other fine book dealers throughout Hawaii in August. The soft-cover book will retail for $14.95.
