Military Museums in Hawaii

Articles and information about military museums in Hawaii. Includes the Hawaii Army Museum, the Pacific Aviation Museum, the Topic Lightning Museum, the USS Arizona Museum, and the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum.

Hawaii Army Museum
The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii is located in Waikiki on the island of Oahu, on the grounds of Fort DeRussy Park. It is housed in a formerly military bastion built to protect Hawaii from invaders. The exhibits in this large museum cover the military history of Hawaii from ancient times to the present day, up to and including the Gulf War and the War in Iraq. The museum is open 10:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and admission is free. Guided tours are available if reservations are made in advance at 808-438-2825.

Pacific Aviation Museum
The first phase of the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor opened to the public on December 7, 2006. The museum is located in Hanger 37, near Ford Island's distinctive red and white striped submarine tower and low-rise air traffic control tower. One of the most fascinating exhibits at the Pacific Aviation Museum is the remains of a Japanese aircraft that crash landed on the island of Niihau after attacking two airfields on the windward side of Oahu. For more information about the Pacific Aviation Museum call 808-836-7747.

Tropic Lightning Museum
This military museum on the grounds of Schofield Barracks in Central Oahu is dedicated to the 25th Infantry Divisioni of the United States Army, also known as "Tropic Lightning". The division was activated October 1, 1941 in Hawaii as part of a mobilization and buildup of army strength in anticipation of the United States entering into World War II. Two months after the Tropic Lightning unit was formed Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese. For more information about the museum call 808-655-0438.
