Dolphin Encounters in Hawaii

Many of the companies who offer whale watching tours in Hawaii from January to March offer dolphin watching tours during the rest of the year.

Sea Life Park Dolphin Cove
A dolphin show in an open air stadium in front of an oceanside lagoon. Show includes dolphin tricks and audience participation. Sea Life Park is located on the windward (southeast) side of the island of Oahu.

Wild Side Swimming With Dolphins Tour
Wild Side Special Tours offers opportunities to swim with dolphins and other sealife. Web site includes guidelines for swimming with dolphins.

Dolphins are airbreathing mammals in the Cetacean family which also includes whales and porpoises. The most common dolphins seen in Hawaii are the
  • Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris),
  • Pantropical Spotted Dolphin
  • Bluenose Dolphin.
  • Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

    Dolphins usually travel and live in schools of 100 to 300 dolphins. They can be seen in many different areas of Hawaii but some of the best places to see dolphins in Hawaii include:
  • Kealakekua Bay on Hawaii Island
  • Manele Bay on Lanai Island
  • La Perouse Bay on Maui Island
