On April 8, 2006 the U.S. Navy announced that the third of their Virginia-class attack submarines would be named the USS Hawaii (SSN-776). The announcement was formally made at USS Bowfin Submarine and Museum in Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu.

In June of 2006 Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle and United States Senator Daniel Inouye attended a blessing at the Electric Boat shipyard in Connecticut, where the USS Hawaii is being constructed. Senator Inouye was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.

The USS Hawaii (SSN-776) Submarine is the third in a series of Virginia-class attack submarine commissioned by the U.S. Navy. It is a nuclear-powered submarine that was designed to operate in both shallow water and deep water, and it uses digital images instead of a periscope to view above the waterline.

The USS Hawaii is expected to be commissioned sometime in 2007. The Navy has not yet selected a home port for the ship but it might be based at Pearl Harbor.
