King Kamehameha United the Hawaiian Islands

King Kamehameha I, also known as King Kamehameha the Great, united the separate island kingdoms of Hawaii in to one large Kingdom of Hawaii.

Kamehameha the Great used a combination of military force and diplomacy to unite all of the Hawaiian Island Kingdoms into one Kingdom.

Kamehameha was born ina about 1758 in Paiea, in the Kohala district of the Big Island of Hawaii.

He became chief of one of the western districts of of the Big Island in 1781. Later, be fought his cousin Kiwalao for power, and he became the ruler of the Big Island.

He then wanted to take power of othe3r Hawaiian Islands. Using weapons purchased from U.S. and European traders he conquored Maui and Molokai. He invaded Oahu in 1795. He came ashore at waikiki beach and led his army to Nuuanu Pali where a bloody battle with Oahu's chief Kalanikupule took place. Hundreds of Oahu's warriors were killed by driving them over the edge of the pali cliffs

He became the first ruler of an almosted united Hawaiian island kingdom in 1795, when he conquored Oahu.

In 1810 Kaumualii, king of kauai surrendered his island to Kamehameha peacefully to avoid further bloodshed.
