Preserving Places in Hawaii
Kapiolani Park Preservation Society
founded in 1988 to preserve and protect the open
spaces in Kapiolani park and discourage commercial
development of the park lands.
Save Kaimana Beach Coalition
A grassroots organization founded to "protect the ambiance
of Kaimana Beach" and support the development
of a memorial beach on the site of the War
Memorial Natatorium. Kaimana Beach and the Natatorium
are located on the Diamond Head end of Waikiki.
Kau Preservation Society
Founded to protect and preserve the 80 miles of
coastline on the southeast coast of the Big Island
of Hawaii and also to preserve the ancestral lands
in that area from the mountains to the sea.
Waikalua Loko Fishpond Preservation Society
Founded in 1995 to restore Waikalua Loko Fishpond in
Kaneohe on the island of Oahu and preserve it as a
hands-on science center for children.
West Maui Preservation Association
Founded to preserve, protect, and restore the natural
and cultural environment of West Maui. The association
is involved in both conservation and educational activities.
Preserving Hawaiian Culture
Hawaii Gourd Preservation Society
Founded to preserve the ancient Hawaiian art
of ipu (Hawaiian gourd) decoration.
Hula Preservation Society
Founded to record the oral histories of
Hawaii's most senior hula elders. The society
is building a library of resources that can
be shared via the Internet, television, DVD,
print, and other media.
Paniolo Preservation Society
Founded to increase public awareness
and appreciation of the significance of the
paniolo (cowboy) in the history of Hawaii.
Slack Key Preservation Society
Founded to preserve and educate the public regarding
Hawaiian music, dance, and cultural arts.
Hawaii Aviation Preservation Society
Founded in 2004 to preserve, research, and record the aviation
history of the Hawaiian Islands.
Hawaii Military Vehicle Preservation Association
Founded in 2002 by a group of Hawaii residents who
collect and preserve military vehicles.
