2008 NEA Hawaii Grants

In 2008 the United States National Endowment for the arts issued 13 grants, totaling $1,069,200 to Hawaii arts organizations, Note that this may not be a complete list and some of the details of these grants may have changed since this list was published.

RECIPIENT: Friends of Iolani Palace
LOCATION: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $15,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum
DESCRIPTION: To support installation of storage equipment to re-house textiles, paintings, prints, and photographs in the permanent collection. New state of the art storage equipment will support the preservation and future use of nearly 1,000 objects.

RECIPIENT: Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education
LOCATION: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $20,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting
DESCRIPTION: To support a series of arts events engaging the local community. The events will include community-based arts projects, exhibitions, and performances.

LOCATION: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $45,000
CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth
DESCRIPTION: To support Arts First program. In partnership with the State of Hawaii Department of Education, the project will involve teachers and artists collaborating to deliver arts lessons using the Arts First Toolkit, a kindergarten to fifth-grade, arts-integration curriculum framework.

RECIPIENT: Hawaii Youth Symphony Association LOCATION: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $32,000
CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth
DESCRIPTION: To support the Symphonic Orchestra Program. Orchestra students from the Hawaiian Islands are brought to Honolulu to rehearse and subsequently perform in one of three youth orchestras.

RECIPIENT: Hawaii's Volcano Circus
LOCATION: Pahoa, Big Island, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $10,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Challenge America Fast-Track Review
DESCRIPTION: To support the Puna Performing Arts Festival and related outreach activities. A series of workshops in circus arts, music, drama, and dance targeting area youth will culminate in public performances during the Festival.

RECIPIENT: Honolulu Theatre for Youth
LOCATION: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $15,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater
DESCRIPTION: To support the production and tour of Aladdin's Luck by Janet Stanford and Fahir Atakoglu. With the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, the play will be performed at the Tenney Theatre and in Oahu schools, followed by a tour to upper and lower elementary schools on the six major Hawaiian islands.

RECIPIENT: Honolulu Theatre for Youth
LOCATION: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $18,000
CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth
DESCRIPTION: To support YouthArts Downtown: Afterschool! theater arts education program. Students will study drama with theater artists, attend professional productions, and create original works based on themes explored during the program.

RECIPIENT: Kalihi-Palama Culture & Arts Society
LOCATION: Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $5,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts
DESCRIPTION: To support the Kalihi-Palama Folk Arts Training Program. The project will provide instruction in music, dance, and crafts of the traditional Asian/Pacific cultures found in Hawaii.

LOCATION: Kahului, Maui, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $45,000

DESCRIPTION: To support a series of performances and related residency activities. Project components will include professional development workshops for teachers, student performances, workshops, and exhibitions, as well as performances by artists to whom the Maui community otherwise would not have access due to geographic constraints.

RECIPIENT: Maui Arts & Cultural Center
LOCATION: Kahului, Maui, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $45,000
CATEGORY: American Masterpieces
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting
DESCRIPTION: To support the Kulanihako'i project. A series of performances and related residency activities will be presented by Hawaiian master artists Sonny Ching and Keali'i Reichel.

LOCATION: Kahului, Maui, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $40,000

FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth
DESCRIPTION: To support Telling Our Stories: The Past is Our Future. In partnership with the State of Hawaii Department of Education, the center will coordinate year-long classroom instruction in Hawaiian storytelling and the elements and principles of drama leading to public student performances.

DESCRIPTION: To support a new production of Verdi's Don Carlo that has never been performed on the island. It prepresents the company's plans to produce more challenging, large-scale repertoire.

DESCRIPTION: To support the touring exhibition The Dragon's Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan, with accompanying catalogue and education programs. The exhibition will explore the Buddhist arts of Bhutan by presenting works of art borrowed from Bhutanese monasteries, on view outside of Asia for the first time.

RECIPIENT: University of Hawaii "Manoa" Journal
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
