2007 NEA Hawaii Grants

In 2007 the United States National Endowment for the arts issued 7+1+3 grants, totaling $786,800 + $10,000 + $50,000 to Hawaii arts organizations. Note that this may not be a complete list and some of the details of these grants may have changed since this list was published.

RECIPIENT: Kahilu Theatre Foundation
LOCATION: Kamuela, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $15,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting
DESCRIPTION: To support music, dance, and theater performances and related outreach activities. Classical and traditional music as well as dance and theater will be presented in remote Waimea communities and surrounding areas.

RECIPIENT: Maui Academy of Performing Arts
LOCATION: Wailuku, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $20,000
CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth
DESCRIPTION: To support the Sum R Acting program, a musical theater camp. Targeted to underserved students, ages seven to 18, the program will offer classes in dance, voice, and acting taught by professional teaching artists.

RECIPIENT: Maui Arts & Cultural Center
LOCATION: Kahului, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $40,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting
DESCRIPTION: To support a series of performances and related residency activities. Residency components will include: professional development workshops for teachers; student performances, workshops, and exhibitions; and performances by artists to whom the Maui community otherwise would not have access due to geographic constraints.

GRANT AMOUNT: $50,000
CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth
DESCRIPTION: To support Telling Our Stories: The Past Is Our Future. A partnership with the Maui District State Department of Education, the project will involve kumu hula (hula teacher) Pono Murray and his group Aheleakala in a residency to teach students about the long history of Hawaiian story telling and poetry as interpreted through chant, dance, drama, and music.

RECIPIENT: Moanalua Gardens Foundation
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $10,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts
DESCRIPTION: To support the 30th anniversary of the Prince Lot Hula Festival. The festival showcases the richness and beauty of Hawaii's host culture in a garden-like setting.

RECIPIENT: Pacific Resources for Education and Learning
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $65,900
CATEGORY: Partnership
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional
DESCRIPTION: To support arts education services and technical assistance to the jurisdictional arts agencies of the Pacific territories. Through technology and inter-territorial art exchanges, the project will increase organizational capacity and collaboration among American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

RECIPIENT: State Foundation on Culture and the Arts
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $585,900

DESCRIPTION: To support Partnership Agreement activities.

RECIPIENT: Bamboo Ridge Press
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $10,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature
DESCRIPTION: To support the publication and promotion of issues of Bamboo Ridge, a journal by and about the people of Hawaii. The journal will publish a special issue of short stories by Joe Tsujimoto.

RECIPIENT: Honolulu Theatre for Youth
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $25,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater
DESCRIPTION: To support the production and tour of a contemporary play. The Stones, by playwrights Stefo Nantsou and Tom Lycos, will tour statewide to a variety of venues for intermediate and high school audiences on the six major Hawaiian Islands.

RECIPIENT: University of Hawaii "Manoa" Journal
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $15,000
CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature
DESCRIPTION: To support publication, promotion, distribution, and related expenses for issues of Manoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing. Scheduled issues will focus on writing from India and Pakistan, as well as literature that addresses increasing world tensions and violence.

RECIPIENT: Kauahea
LOCATION: Wailuku, Hawaii
GRANT AMOUNT: $10,000
CATEGORY: FAST TRACK GRANT
DESCRIPTION: To support Na Mea No'eau, a series of workshops focusing on the making of hula implements, clothing, and adornments. Master Hawaiian artisans will participate in the project as workshop leaders.
