2003 NEA Hawaii Grants

In 2003 the United States National Endowment for the arts issued 4+8 grants, totaling $128,000 + $877,300 to Hawaii arts organizations. Note that this may not be a complete list and some of the details of these grants may have changed since this list was published.

RECIPIENT: Bamboo Ridge Press
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $10,000
CATEGORY: Creativity
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature
DESCRIPTION: To support publication, promotion and distribution costs for issues of Bamboo Ridge. Proposed issues include a 25th anniversary edition and a special issue on Hawaiian writers of Korean heritage.

RECIPIENT: Bishop Museum
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $75,000
CATEGORY: Leadership
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum
DESCRIPTION: To support the preservation of the museum's vast Hawaiian Cultural Collection. Environmental stabilization and climate control improvements of Hawaiian Hall are critical to saving the collection, which reflects the diverse legacy of Native Hawaiian culture and 19th and 20th century Hawaiian immigration.

RECIPIENT: Honolulu Theatre for Youth
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $23,000
CATEGORY: Creativity
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater
DESCRIPTION: To support the production of a play. Y. York's Garden of Rikki Tikki Tavi will be directed by Artistic Director by Mark Lutwak and presented to Oahu children and families in the spring of 2003.

RECIPIENT: University of Hawaii "Manoa" Journal
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $20,000

FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature
DESCRIPTION: To support publication, promotion, distribution and related expenses for issues of Manoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing. Scheduled issues will feature Cambodian and Cambodian-American writing and postmodern Chinese fiction

RECIPIENT: Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $90,000

FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Arts Education
DESCRIPTION: To support Arts First. This project will support development and implementation of an elementary school arts learning curriculum incorporating dance, drama, music and visual arts.

LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $10,000

FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk & Traditional Arts
DESCRIPTION: To support a series of training classes in traditional and contemporary art forms. Classes include Hawaiian, Samoan, Okinawan, Tahitian and contemporary Filipino dance, as well as crafts and ukulele playing.

RECIPIENT: National Organization for Traditional Artists Exchange
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $25,000
CATEGORY: Folk Arts Infrastructure
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk & Traditional Arts
DESCRIPTION: To support a folklorist position and related costs. Responsibilities will include coordination of school and community programs on four rural islands, as well as documentation of traditional artists to be showcased on the Pacific Visions radio series.

RECIPIENT: Pacific Resources for Education and Learning

GRANT AMOUNT: $76,000

DESCRIPTION: To support arts education services and technical assistance to the jurisdictional arts agencies of the Pacific territories.

RECIPIENT: Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific Foundation
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $15,000

FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts
DESCRIPTION: To support studio arts instruction for patients at the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific. Instruction is provided by professional guest artists who tailor their approach to the particular needs of adults and children with physical or cognitive disabilities.

RECIPIENT: State Foundation on Culture and the Arts
LOCATION: Honolulu, HI
GRANT AMOUNT: $581,300

DESCRIPTION: To support Partnership Agreement activities.

RECIPIENT: Maui Arts & Cultural Center
LOCATION: Kahului, HI

DESCRIPTION: To support Ho'ike: Arts for All. The professional development program for teachers and artists will be expanded to reach increased numbers of students in Maui County communities.

RECIPIENT: Maui Arts & Cultural Center

GRANT AMOUNT: $40,000
CATEGORY: Access
FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting
DESCRIPTION: To support a presenting series and expand residency activities. The project will feature Hawaiian based music and dance events, as well as dance, theater and music performances by U.S. and international artists.
