Honolulu County Funding Awards

Information about all of the Honolulu County recipients of funding under the 2009 Hawaii Tourism Association's County Product Enrichment Program. HTA PEP funding supports projects in the areas of agritourism, cultural tourism, ecotourism, edutourism, health & wellness tourism, and technotourism.

January Honolulu County Events Funded

EVENT: Ala Wai Challenge
EVENT DATE: January 25, 2009 (8 am to 1:30 pm) DESCRIPTION: Canoe races and Hawaiian games

EVENT Moanikeala Hula Festival
EVENT DATE: January 17, 2008 (19th annual event)
EVENT VENUE: Polynesian Cultural Center
LOCATION: Laie, Oahu Northeast Shore
ORGANIZATION: Polynesian Cultural Center
The Moanikeala Hula Festival features keiki (children) and adult dancers performing both hula auana and hula kahiko. The festival is named in honor of Aunty Sally Moanikeala Wood Naluai, who served as the Polynesian Cultural Center's first kumu hula or "hula master" from its opening on October 12, 1963, until she retired in 1980. After retiring, Aunty Sally remained a hula consultant until she passed away in January 2000.

ORGANIZATION: Hawaii First Lego League The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) introduces young people, ages 9 to 14, to the fun and excitement of science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge and life skills. FLL challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers.

The Narcissus Festival is a several month long series of events that usually begins in January. Events include a kickoff reception, a Narcissus Queen pageant, the queen's coronation ball, public appearances by the queen and her court, a fashion show, a "night in Chinatown" street festival that includes a parade, and a China goodwill tour. The first Chinese Narcissus Festival in Honolulu took place in 1950.

LOCATION: Downtown Honolulu
This four day Chinese New Year festival in Honolulu's Chinatown features entertainment such as dancers and singers, food vendors, arts and crafts, martial arts demonstrations, and other Chinese cultural activities and demonstrations.
