About the Hawaii Tourism Authority

The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) is an organization created in 1998 to develop and promote tourism in Hawaii. The organization has five main areas of responsibility: (1) marketing Hawaii to visitors, (2) marketing Hawaii as a venue for high profile sports events, (3) product developemnt, (4) reseach and planning, and (5) operating and marketing the Hawaii Convention Center.

History of the Hawaii Tourism Authority
The HTA was created in 1998 by Session Laws of Hawaii Act 156, an act that also increased the Tourism Special Fund (TAT) tax from 6% to 7.25% and allocated the 1.25% increase to the Tourism Special Fund, effective January 1, 1999. The Tourism Special Fund was established to support the Hawaii Tourism Authority and its goals.

Purpose of the Hawaii Tourism Authority
The HTA is the lead agency and advocate for Hawaii's tourism industry and their main goal is to ensure a successful Hawaii visitor industry in the future. Their formally stated mission is "to strategically manage Hawaii tourism in a sustainable manner consistent with our economic goals, cultural values, preservation of natural resources, community desires and visitor industry needs"

Hawaii Tourism Authority Programs

    Promote Hawaii to the world as a leisure and business destination. Increase visitor expenditures. This area is a significant part of HTA's budget.
    invests in sporting events that generate awareness of the Hawaii brand and make Hawaii a desirable destination for high profile high quality sporting events. Market Hawaii as a sporting event venue in the national and intl media. attraction visitors to Hi as participatents and spectators.

    The "product" in this case is Hawaii's tourism industry. Goals are to improveme visitor experience, encouraging length of stay, reduce seasonal peaks and valleys, ease overcrowding of popular visitor resources, add value to existing product mix
    Short and long range planning, including develop strategic plans for the future.
    The HTA operates and markets the Hawaii Convention Center.
